The DVD series Under the Horse and Tools of the Trade should be made prerequisite to Donkey Hooves: Inside and Out in all training programs.
Detailed instruction on the care and rehabilitation of donkey hooves
3 DVDs teach how to trim donkey hooves. Learn anatomy through detailed dissections. Watch as foundered and imbalanced hooves are corrected over time.
Ivy and Pete Ramey will take you to visit wild burros in the Mojave Desert, and discuss their needs, lifestyle and how we may use this information to make a healthier life for our domestic donkeys. We go from classroom to cadaver dissections to “out on the farm” to detail the hoof care of donkeys.
“Well, I’ve been promising donkey owners I would do this for way-too-many years. Sorry for the wait, but here it is! To the best of our ability, Ivy and I have put together a comprehensive donkey hoof care course designed for owners, farriers and veterinarians. To my delight, I learned a lot along the way, myself: chasing wild burros and dissecting donkey hooves taught me things I never knew—and you all know how much I love to learn!
It is truly a shame how little information there is out there dedicated to the care of donkeys—particularly their hooves. They are too unique to be lumped together with horses as a footnote. I hope that some of the differences revealed in this DVD set will inspire new research on donkeys as individuals. And more than anything, I hope this will improve the lives and care of donkeys worldwide.” Pete Ramey

Added 5-30-11. We've had numerous questions about whether this DVD set covers mules: “This DVD set is specifically about donkeys. I should really do a mule DVD at some point, but honestly, some mules have a ‘donkey foot’ and some mules have a ‘horse foot’. Most are somewhere in between, with features from both parents. So if you saw me working on and discussing the anatomy and growth characteristics of 6 different mules, your mule’s foot might still be different. The only way (I know of) to be successful with mule feet, is to become an expert on both horse feet AND donkey feet, so you can then interpolate and understand the mule in front of you. So I do highly recommend this DVD set for mule owners/trimmers/vets/farriers, but sorry, there is not a mule in it anywhere.” Pete

If you want to trim your own donkeys, or you just want to get your horse farrier to be a better donkey trimmer, this DVD set is a must. I have been trimming my own donkeys for over 5 years, and I started it all off with this set. I have watched these DVDs many times, and I learn something new each time.

Thank you Ivy and Pete for your DVD on donkey feet. I am a barefoot specialist in northern Ontario and have only disected horse feet, so your anatomy section was great. I have a case who is a 2 yr. old mini donkey, so his feet are only about 2" wide, and I have to estimate how high his colateral groove should be off the ground as I don't trust measurements on such a tiny foot. He had toe separation and was too long, the diet and exercise has been addressed, but we live in the Canadian Shield on clay and swamp, so footing is a problem here. We have long winters with deep snow and lots of ice build up in the feet, so asking to soak feet here is difficult, I get my clients to spray the feet with an apple cider vinegar solution which is working. Keep making the DVD's, I learn something new with each set.

Thank you Pete and Ivy for what you are doing for the equine world! This set of DVDs are a great teaching tool for taking care of donkey's feet and feeding them the way they should be fed. I bought the DVDs because I took in a donkey with the crest on it's neck and it's feet over grown along with separation of the hoof capsule. The poor girl could hardly walk she hurt so bad. I couldn't get in contact with my farrier at the time for him to get out to help her. So following the instructions on the DVDs I've gotten her trimmed so she is walking pretty good now in only two weeks. She still has a long way to go but by following Pete and Ivy's advice on how to treat her with a new diet and foot work I'm sure she will recover just fine.
